Galápagos Islands take first step to be fossil fuel free

Ecuador has taken the first step towards ending the oil dependence of its Galápagos Islands, in the eastern Pacific Ocean, with the official opening of a 10.8 million dollar wind energy facility on the island of San Cristóbal. Ecuador's President Rafael Correa toured the facility as part of a celebration of the 500th anniversary of the discovery of the Galápagos, and proposed to declare the islands fossil fuel free by 2015.
OECD: Tackle environmental problems now or pay more later

World wind power reaches 100,000 megawatts

Global installed wind power capacity will top 100,000 megawatts this month (March 2008) at current rates of growth. In 2007, wind power capacity increased by a record-breaking 20,000 mgws, bringing the world total to 94,100 mgws - enough to satisfy the residential electricity needs of 150 million people.
Renewable energy becoming mainstream

The renewable energy industry is stepping up its meteoric rise into the mainstream of the energy sector, according to the REN21 Renewables 2007 Global Status Report just published. Renewable energy production capacities are growing rapidly as a result of more countries enacting far-reaching policies.
