Oxford slips down British university green league table

Nottingham Trent University has topped the 2009 Green League table of British Universities, published today. It is followed by the London School of Economics (LSE) and Oxford Brookes University. But Oxford University itself has fallen to 84th place out of 147 universities, based on their environmetnal performance.
The universities are judged on both policy and performance, including the percentage of waste recycled and CO2 emissions, by the student campaigning organisation people & planet (not to be confused with People & the Planet website you are reading). This year's table, published in Times Higher Education, shows many universities are now successfully pioneering environmental management.
However, say the league table organisers, some of the universities most respected for their research and teaching on sustainability and climate change, are still laggards when it comes to improving their own environmental performance. For example, the University of Oxford which topped various Good University Guides for 2009, and is home to the Environmental Change Institute and the School of Enterprise and the Environment, drops 34 places to 84rd place - and is awarded a 3rd class degree.
"The 2009 Green League makes it crystal clear too many universities have failed to recognise the importance of becoming a model low carboninstitution. A clear pattern is emerging - with a premier league of universities which are ahead of the wave and the rest. Vice-Chancellorsand other leaders need to ask themselves which league they want to be in."
